Fraud Management - VoIP Fraud

Voice over IP (VoIP) is susceptible to many of the threats afflicting traditional voice services but the ease of setting up a VoIP hosting service, lax international regulation, co-existence with other IP protocols, anonymity and lack of location transparency all contribute to fraud and security issues.

Potential security risks to VoIP are denial of service, viruses and spamming, with Caller ID spoofing emerging as a useful tool for identity theft and phishing scams as millions of people have internet telephony equipment that can be set up to make any number appear on the Caller ID system.  With the mobility that VoIP offers, fraudsters have a level of anonymity that exceeds even that of prepaid GSM.
